PEP503, aka NBTXR3, is a nanoparticle radio-enhancer for tumor local treatment. Unlike the radio-sensitizer, with the inert nature and high electron density of the hafnium oxide, PEP503 can result in high energy deposit in the tumor.

Overview
Radiation therapy is a common treatment modality for varies of cancers and may apply to more than 60% of cancer patients. It is often used alone or in combination with chemotherapy. However, radiation therapy also has notable disadvantages, such as a longer treatment period and unavoidable side effects. In order to treat the cancer many technologies and methods have been developed to ameliorate radiotherapy.
PEP503, aka NBTXR3, is a nanoparticle formulation of hafnium oxide (HfO2) crystals for tumor local treatment. Unlike the radio-sensitizer, with the inert nature and no pharmacological effect of the nanoparticles, PEP503 do not interact with tumor or normal cells. After the intra-tumoral injection to locally implant PEP503 in the tumor, owing to the high electron density of the hafnium oxide PEP503 nanoparticles can interact with ionizing radiation and result in higher energy deposit at where the nanoparticles are located and enhance the effect of radiotherapy.
Application
Radiation oncology – indications which radiotherapy currently or potentially can be applied, e.g. soft tissue sarcoma, head and neck cancer, prostate cancer, rectal cancer, liver cancer,…etc.
