Overview
The Chi Mei Medical Center (CMMC) boasts a long history of joining medical volunteers to the world's poorest countries. However, this year was the first time wherein our department was given the opportunity in sharing our knowledge with our peers in El Salvador.
 
A 2-yrs training programfor Radiation Oncology was signed jointlyby Chi Mei Medical Center with the National Health Bureau of the Republic of El Salvador early this year. Three El Salvador physicians were assigned to our department. And training start from May 2016 to April 2018.
 
The mission of the educational program is to train global leaders in radiation oncology. The program is centered on patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism and systems-based practice. Through rigorous hands-on teaching, and formal instruction, the program aims to provide trainees with the necessary foundation and confidence for a career of lifelong learning and evidence-base patient care.
 
Features
The Department features the following treatment equipment and capabilities: two linear accelerators with MLC and independent jaws; an® IGRT system; a RPM and an active breathing coordinator system; a CyberKnife® stereotactic radiosurgery system; a TomoTherapy® system; a CT-scan simulator; high dose rate brachytherapy equipment (Liuoying Chi Mei campus).  These machines permit high energy X-ray, electron beam, and specialized radiation treatments.

Other specialized treatment programs include intraoperative radiation therapy for early Breast cancer and total body irradiation for bone marrow transplantation.

Advanced treatment planning systems on computer work stations are used for all types of external beam, interstitial and intracavitary treatment plans that are routinely used in the clinical management of patients.

Didactic teaching courses with lectures twice a week are held in radiation physics and dissymmetry, radiation cancer biology. Post-graduate physician on training also participate in teaching, patient care and research , as well as attend both in-house and multidisciplinary tumor board conferences scheduled at Chi Mei Medical Center. They also have an opportunity to attend a variety of oncology-related lecture and symposia elsewhere within the vicinity of Tainan.

1. Teaching program encompasses the fundamental principles of oncology, comprehensive cancer management, clinical radiation oncology, radiation treatment techniques, patient safety and healthcare engineering, and a research experience.
 
2. An “in house” didactic teaching of radiation therapy physics, dissymmetry, treatment planning, biostatistics, radiation and cancer biology, and MRI/ CT scan image study by nationally-recognized expert educator.
 
3.Training occurs in an apprentice-like format, a one-on-one teaching is emphasize, each trainee is assigned a 3 months site- specific clinical rotations practicing under the supervision of attending physicians during the course of training.
