Hospital Collaboration Project
Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery (MICS) CollaborationFar Eastern Memorial Hospital has become the Asia-Pacific Endoscopic Vein Harvesting Training Center due to our ample experience in the endoscopic great saphenous vein harvesting procedure and the beating heart coronary artery bypass surgery. Our number of cases of endoscopic MICS is the top in Taiwan. Since 2012, around 300 people from 22 different countries have been accepted to FEMH for MICS training. In 2012, we hosted “The First Far Eastern Symposium on Minimally Invasive Surgery – Valve Surgery”, and about 200 top cardiovascular surgeons from USA, Japan, France and Taiwan joined the event. During the symposium, we demonstrated the minimally invasive heart valve surgery, and exchanged valuable experience with many experts from around the world. It expands our view in MICS that is highly beneficial to our patients with various heart diseases.
FEMH Cardiovascular Surgery Team participates in international cooperation projects as well. The team has signed more than 40 MOUs with hospitals from different countries such as Japan, North Korea, Vietnam, India, Thailand and China. Japan has already sent many young trainees to FEMH for training program. Also, the team trained the cardiovascular surgery team from the North Korea Red Cross Hospital, and those trainees were able to perform open-heart surgeries in their own hospital after completing the training courses.
Since 2008, Dr. Chiu, Kuan-Ming has been routinely invited to give a keynote speech and/or surgery demonstrations in Hong Kong, Japan, China, Malaysia, Macau, Europe and USA because of his rich experience in MICS. He also accepts foreign physicians to observe his methods in FEMH. He hopes more surgical patients with heart diseases will be benefited from MICS by sharing this advanced approach with more doctors.
