Overview
Bariatric surgery includes a variety of procedures performed on people who have obesity. Weight loss is achieved by reducing the size of the stomach with through removal of a portion of the stomach or by resection and resecting and re-routing the small intestine to a small stomach pouch, sleeve gastrectomy, and Roux-en-y gastric bypass respectively.
Features
Undergo a weight-loss procedure could have a low risk of complications or death from morbid obesity based on many studies. The investigators found that the 30-day complication rate for Roux-en-Y gastric bypass patients was 3.4%, about the same as laparoscopic gallbladder surgery and hysterectomy. The 30-day death rate for gastric bypass patients was 0.30%, about the same as total knee replacement and one-tenth that of heart surgery. Weight loss surgery is a relatively safe procedure and it is estimated more than 200,000 weight loss surgical procedures performed in U.S. and Canada in 2015.
